About Snakewood
What is Snakewood?
Snakewood (Botanical name: Brosimum guianense) is one of the world’s rarest and most distinctive hardwoods. It is known for its unique pattern, which resembles the markings of snake skin, giving the species its common name.
Its exceptional density, strength, and natural beauty make it a popular choice among luthiers, cue makers, knifemakers, woodturners, fine woodworkers, furniture makers, and collectors.
Because every piece is naturally different, Snakewood is one of the most unique exotic hardwoods available.
Why is Snakewood so rare?
Snakewood naturally grows in a limited region of northern South America and is not harvested on the same scale as many commercial hardwood species.
In addition, only a portion of each log is suitable for high-end woodworking applications due to the wood’s natural characteristics and highly figured grain. This makes quality Snakewood less common and more difficult to source.
Why is Snakewood so expensive?
Several factors influence the value of Snakewood.
It is naturally less available than many other hardwoods, requires careful processing and drying, and every piece must be individually inspected and selected before it is offered for sale.
Its remarkable figure, exceptional density, and the amount of care involved in preparing quality material make Snakewood one of the most valuable exotic hardwoods available to woodworkers.
How do I choose the right Snakewood for my project?
The right Snakewood depends on your project and the dimensions you require.
At Snakewood Supply, our inventory is organized by both product category and application, including lumber, veneers, tonewood, knife handles, cue making, fine woodworking, and more.
Within each category, we offer a range of dimensions so you can select the size that best fits your project. Wherever possible, dimensions are chosen to provide the closest match for common applications while allowing makers to resaw material efficiently and minimize waste.
If you’re unsure which product is best suited for your project, we’re always happy to help.
How are Snakewood dimensions measured?
We carefully measure every piece individually and list the dimensions of the exact item being sold.
Dimensions are taken from the smallest usable part of the piece, ensuring you receive at least the listed size. If a board tapers in width or thickness, both measurements will be provided in the product description whenever applicable.
Our product photos also include a measuring tape, allowing you to clearly see the length, width, and thickness before making your purchase.
Because Snakewood is a natural material, minor variations may occur, but our goal is to provide accurate measurements so you can buy with confidence.
Is Snakewood kiln dried?
No.
Our Snakewood is naturally air dried rather than kiln dried.
Some pieces in our inventory have been air dried for several months, while others have been carefully aged for many years. Both are suitable for woodworking when properly acclimated and used with appropriate woodworking practices.
Does Snakewood contain natural checks or color variation?
Yes.
As a natural hardwood, every piece of Snakewood is unique. Variations in color, figure, and grain pattern are normal characteristics that make each piece unique.
While Snakewood can naturally develop small checks or other characteristics, many of our pieces are completely check free. We carefully hand select our inventory and remove as many natural defects as possible before offering material for sale.
If a piece contains a notable natural feature such as a check, knot, inclusion, or other characteristic we’ll clearly show it in the product photos, including close-up images whenever possible, so you know exactly what you’re purchasing.
Every product is individually photographed, and you’ll receive the exact piece shown on the product page.
How is Snakewood graded?
Every piece of Snakewood is individually inspected and graded based on characteristics such as figure, grain quality, natural features, dimensions, and overall appearance.
Our grading system is designed to help you choose the material that best matches your project, whether you’re looking for highly figured premium pieces, instrument-grade material, or practical stock for everyday woodworking.
For a detailed explanation of each grade and what to expect, please see our Snakewood Grading Guide.
Working with Snakewood
How should I store Snakewood?
Store Snakewood indoors in a cool, dry, and stable environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and rapid changes in humidity.
For boards and lumber, store them flat on a level surface with adequate support to help maintain their shape. Before machining, allow the wood to gradually acclimate to your workshop environment.
Why is Snakewood sealed with wax?
All of our Snakewood is fully sealed with wax before shipping.
The wax helps slow moisture loss and reduces the risk of checking or cracking during storage, transportation, and changes in temperature or humidity. This protective coating helps preserve the quality of the wood until you’re ready to use it.
How do I remove the wax?
The wax should be removed before machining or using the wood.
The easiest method is to remove the wax with your first cut on a saw, planer, or jointer. You can also scrape it away using a cabinet scraper, hand scraper, or similar tool. Because the wax is much softer than Snakewood, it removes easily and does not require special equipment.
If you’re not planning to use the wood immediately, we recommend leaving the wax in place until you’re ready to begin your project.
Can Snakewood crack after purchase?
Snakewood is one of the densest hardwoods in the world and naturally responds to changes in temperature and humidity.
When stored and handled correctly, many pieces remain stable for years without developing checks or cracks. However, like any natural hardwood, Snakewood may develop movement or small checks if it dries too quickly or is exposed to sudden environmental changes.
Proper storage, gradual acclimation, and careful woodworking practices will greatly reduce this risk.
How should I dry freshly resawn Snakewood?
After resawing, it’s important to slow the drying process to reduce the risk of checking.
Seal or wax the freshly cut surfaces as soon as possible, then stack the boards flat using dry spacers (stickers) between each layer to allow even airflow.
Store the stack indoors in a cool, shaded area with stable temperature and humidity. Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat, or strong airflow, as drying too quickly can increase the risk of checks, cracks, or movement.
If you’re unsure how to dry or store freshly resawn Snakewood, we’re always happy to help.
How should I store partially used Snakewood?
If you’ve cut a board but won’t be using the remaining material immediately, reseal the freshly exposed surfaces or end grain as soon as possible.
Wax, shellac, or another suitable end-grain sealer will help slow moisture loss and reduce the risk of checking.
Store the remaining material flat in a stable indoor environment until you’re ready to continue your project.
Can I resaw Snakewood into thinner pieces?
Yes.
Many of our Snakewood boards are selected specifically for resawing into thinner material for applications such as guitar backs and sides, veneers, cue components, knife scales, and other specialty woodworking projects.
Wherever possible, we offer dimensions that are practical for resawing, allowing makers to maximize yield while minimizing waste.
What tools work best with Snakewood?
Snakewood is extremely dense, so sharp, high-quality cutting tools are essential.
For the best results, we recommend using sharp carbide blades and cutters, taking light passes, and maintaining a steady feed rate. Working patiently and avoiding aggressive cuts will produce cleaner results while reducing stress on both the wood and your tools.
What if my Snakewood develops a small check?
Although many pieces remain stable, wood is a natural material and can respond to changes in temperature and humidity.
If you notice a small check beginning to develop, slowing the drying process and maintaining a stable environment can help prevent further movement. Depending on your project, minor checks can often be removed during machining.
If you have any questions about your Snakewood or how to work with it, feel free to contact us. We’re always happy to help.
Sustainability & Responsible Sourcing
Where does your Snakewood come from?
Our Snakewood is responsibly sourced from South America through trusted suppliers who comply with all applicable laws and regulations governing the harvest and trade of exotic hardwoods.
We carefully select our suppliers to ensure the material is legally obtained and suitable for specialty woodworking applications.
Is your Snakewood legally sourced?
Yes.
We are committed to sourcing Snakewood responsibly and work only with trusted suppliers who comply with applicable forestry and international trade regulations.
Whenever possible, our suppliers also recover Snakewood from naturally fallen trees, helping make use of valuable material that would otherwise go to waste.
We maintain the necessary documentation to verify the legal origin of our Snakewood and comply with applicable import and trade requirements.
Do you support sustainable sourcing?
Yes.
Responsible sourcing is an important part of our business. We work with trusted suppliers who follow legal harvesting practices and applicable environmental regulations.
By carefully selecting our suppliers and making the best possible use of every piece of Snakewood, we aim to reduce waste while providing high-quality material for woodworkers, luthiers, cue makers, knifemakers, and other craftspeople.
What is the Lacey Act?
The Lacey Act is a United States law that helps prevent the trade of illegally harvested plants and wood products.
Snakewood Supply complies with all applicable Lacey Act requirements and maintains the necessary documentation to support the legal import and sale of our Snakewood.
Can I buy Snakewood with confidence?
Absolutely.
Every piece of Snakewood we offer is individually selected, photographed, accurately measured, and clearly described.
We are committed to responsible sourcing, transparency, and quality, so you can purchase with confidence knowing exactly what you’ll receive.
Safety & California Proposition 65
What is California Proposition 65?
California Proposition 65 requires businesses to inform customers if products may expose them to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. This can include naturally occurring substances found in raw wood and wood dust.
Do your products contain Proposition 65-listed substances?
Our products are sold in their natural, untreated form. While we do not add chemicals, some wood species may naturally contain trace amounts of substances listed under Proposition 65, and wood dust generated during cutting or sanding is also included under these regulations.
Is there any safety information I should be aware of when using your wood?
Raw wood is safe to handle in its natural state. However, machining, sanding, or cutting wood may generate dust, which can contain Proposition 65-listed substances. We recommend using appropriate dust control measures and personal protective equipment when working with wood.
